[WinXPHelp] Re: Deleting Duplicate Folders... Which Ones

Ok,Ok we are talking about duplicate links...
I have been referring this thread based on what I had seen in Windows
IE view (naviagation panel on the left side). I say this because I did
not have an Icon ON THE DESKTOP for My Document or My Computer(I had
created a Shortcut for this Icon, which is now deleted).... So I went
to Properties and Customized Desktop and checked on My Documents and My
Computer. And it is now on my desktop, which is good!

I will not delete anything else, especially folders below Document and
Settings... I will leave well enought alone.

Thanks for everyones help... it has been educational...

[WinXPHelp] Auto Showing Presentations

I have Corel X3 installed and just completed my first auto showing
presentation. The exporting to Powerpoint is awful. It makes the graphics
looked smudged.

Now when I exported to a Corel auto showing document, the program
created two separate .EXE files. Do I need both of them to run the auto
showing file? Is this just a bonus that it makes two separate files and
which am I to keep?

Please advise.

Re: [WinXPPro] Windows XP

Hi:
I believe I may have responded to the following message incorrectly and to
be sure I am resending my response..........

(Quote)

change It back to Windows XP.Any help would be
appreciated.
Thank you.
Terry.

Hi Terry:
Yes you may easily, and again you may have difficulty. I recommend that
you try a "Dual Boot" installation where you can keep both XP and Vista on the
same machine. This will not take a lot of additional space. You should at
the same time create a "data Partition" that will allow you to view your
saved data with either XP or Vista. Goto _www.apcmag.com_
(http://www.apcmag.com/) >Windows> then on the right side find "Dual booting XP and Vista" for
step by step instructions. If you are confused by the use of Microsoft
"DiskPart" you may want to obtain a third party partitioning tool, Always a good
investment. Hope this helps

RE: [WinXPHelp] Re: new Icons

for non-windows (ie recycle bin) files or folders, it is pretty easy. Download irfanview (free) then when installed select the photo or image you want to use as an icon. From file, select save as. From the drop down menu on the "save as" box, select "windows icon .ico" as the file type, name the icon whatever you want, and save. (my docs or a new folder, my icons in my docs) is easiest. Right click the folder or file you want to change the icon of, select properties, select the "customize" tab on top of the properties box, select "change icon" (bottom of the customize panel) navagate to your icon folder /my documents/my icons, select the icon you want (the one you downloaded or created) click open, apply, and ok.

Re: [WinXPPro] Wireless network & Wireless Logitech

Pepole are embracing and taking all kinds of wireless
technologies for granted these days.

Including wireless phones, cellulars, wireless networks, multiple
IRs, wireless doorbells, baby monitors, HDTV reception,
scanners, repeters and extenders, re-transmission, garage door
controls, the list is virtually endless !

If you live in a dense urban enviroment, high-rise apartments &
condos in particular, it's a miracle that anything that's wireless
does work at all, given the prospects for harmonic interference.

I know for experience in TV systems Broadcast Engineering where a
dozen or more news or sports camera crews have shown at venues and
events with various wireless microphones, wideband transmitters,
intercoms, foldback monitors, and recievers, often is the case that
the only crew to get a useable signal out live and in realtime, are
the guys who use wired microphones, and are hardwired from the camera
outputs to the transmission hub.

So many factors and circumstances can advercely effect wireless
technologies it's not even funny.

I've seen situations where the atmoshpere or "either" in a local
enviroment is so saturated with RF energy that even hardwired systems
and control logic circuitry are effected.

And, all this will only get worse, and worse and still worse with the
unbridled proliferation, and new found hapless dependence on this
technology.

There's a famous case of an individual who lived in reletive proximity
to a Television broadcast transmission antenna site, and absolutely
nothing in his house would run properly on wireless.
He took the broadcaster to court, but lost.

Re: [WinXPPro] New computer with Power supply issue

I have 2 older Emachines desktop platforms.
They work quite well, as I have upgraded them in as much
as is practical.

I do notice however that the power supplies are small,
in physical size, and capacity, in relation to the machine,
at least in comparision to IBM, Compac/HP or Dell products.

This can begin to become an issue for example with the addition of
multiple drives, and an extra fan(s).

The 2 units I have are neatly built and well engineered,
but in terms of PS, apparently to minimal requirments,
without a great reserve capacity for system growth.

Never the less, it hasn't been a critical issue in my case,
and the machines serve me as is.

[WinXPPro] Sansa Veiw & XPSP2

I have a Sansa Veiw MP-3 & MP-4 Video player.

In XP service pack 1, I could see the unit listed
in My Computer, I could explore the device and drop
& drag.

In SP-2, it's no longer accessable, under that technique.

Checking the driver, removing, re-detecting
and re-installing is a dead end.

Any thoughts ?

Moreover, why is everything to do with
MS products like this ? And Always
a hassle ?

M

[WinXPHelp] Re: Deleting Duplicate Folders... Which Ones

You are getting Basic Idea wrong. What you have is not duplicate
folders but duplicate links. Its useful for easy navigation.
If you want to remove my documents from Desktop,
Right Click on Desktop.
Go to properties --> Desktop---> Customise Desktop
Uncheck My Documents, Hit Apply and OK

For removing "User's Documents" from My Computer, you may have to
change the registry. I don't know which key to edit.

So you can remove these two "links"

Don't remove whatever you have in "C:\Documents and Settings" as this
is the absolute location. Windows will not allow you to delete from
there. If you suceed in removing, the folder will be recreated when
you reboot as it is a "system folder"

I'll try Jill! First open your recipe page. Next click in the page anywhere.
Then with the cursor on the page, Click CTRL+ A, That should highlight the
entire page. Next click CTRL+ C, That should copy the whole page. Next open
Notepad, Click in notepad, when you see the cursor, click CTRL+V. That should
paste the recipe page in Notepad. When it appears, just highlight the sections
you don't want by putting the cursor at the beginning of the unwanted part,
with the cursor on the beginning, holddown SHIFT while you pull the cursor to
the end of the unwanted parr. When the unwanted part is completely
highlighted, click on the DEL key. That should get rid of that part. Continue till all
that's left is what you want. Next click on FILE, then PRINT or PRINT

[WinXPHelp] What's between being an administrator and just a user

I am using Win XP Home. I have been trying to use the computer just
as a user and not an administrator because it is supposed to be safer.
I don't mind having to change back to being an admin. to install
something or do a backup, but to just scan something is too much. I
understand that with XP pro, there is a "power user" area that lies in
between. Is there anything out there that can override a few of these
limitations in xp home? - Keith

Either that or scan the pieces, save them as bitmaps and then open Paint

Re: [WinXPHelp] Re: Deleting Duplicate Folders... Which Ones

I think this is generally true of the icons/listings that don't have the
little arrow box in the lower left corner. For those icons that do,
there is usually a Shortcut tab.

I'm hesitant to say 'always' or 'never'.

Sounds like you are using an OCR program. If you just want to copy the
paper, do that; just select copy and copy as a black and white photo.
If you want text that you can edit, then you'll have to keep using the
OCR program.

You might look into other OCR programs. the one that comes with
scanners is sometimes very restricted.

All OCR programs require a bit of editing and proofreading; the amount
depends on the program and on the original font and clarity.

Jill, IF you are trying to just find a particular
receipe or perhaps a receipe that you *know* contains
the word 'mountain' or the phrase 'mountain top
frosting,' for example, easily enough you can drill
down your search via Start>Search>For Files or
Folders>All files and folders>A word or phrase in the
file: Type in what ur looking for then make sure the
correct drive is specified. Click on 'Search!" HTH

Re: [WinXPPro] Windows XP Home Messed Up Situation

Outlook works, but your Web Broswer doesnt. Something in common with the web browser blockes it. Try this, open up outlook and type in a web page. See if you can pull up the page. if you can, then you have some sort of spyware. I just saw this the other day on my buddies computer. We ran Kaspersky Anti-Virus (One of the best AVs out there) it found it, fixed it, and he can browe pages in his choice of browsers.

Subject: [WinXPPro] Windows XP Home Messed Up Situation

I have a lone Windows XP Home computer on a network with three other
Windows XP Pro machines. All connect to a cable router through an
older Linksys Wireless Router. The problem is that the Windows XP
Pro machines can all connect to the internet and File Share, but the
Home machine cannot, that is either connect to the internet nor File
share (it doesn't see the other 3). But, it does send and receive
email through Outlook and send & receive updates from WeatherBug.
I installed Mozilla FireFox to see if that made a difference thinking
that maybe Internet Exploder had a hoarked setting that I couldn't
locate, but Firefox can't access the internet either. Oh and I
didn't import anything from IE during the Firefox install.
The Windows XP Home firewall is turned off.
The Norton firewall is open to NetBios and just about every other
thing that I thought might affect internet access to no avail.
I've tried manually allowing only the MAC addresses that are on the
network, but that didn't make any difference so I restored the router
defaults.
My NIC looks good in >Control Panel >System >Hardware and is
obviously working as evidenced by the WeatherBug and Outlook
connectivity.
I'm stumped.
Any suggestions?

Re: [WinXPPro] Wireless network & Wireless Logitech

Within the 2.4Ghz spectrum, there are a lot of smaller channels. I would imagine that the mouse has a real small bandwidth of passing the data, maybe 1Khz or less

To give you an example:

2,400,000,000 is a centerfreq. So the mouse would operate on 2,400,000,500 to 2,399,999,500. Now, near the 2.4ghz range are several channels. Some may be 2,400,005,000 or something to the effect. The mouse if operation on the 2.4ghz freq exact, would not interfere with the second device.

So what does this mean to you, Trial and error. Unplug your mouse, and see if you connect. Also, you can go into your router and change the channel. Think the channels are 1-11, but dont quote me on that.

Subject: [WinXPPro] Wireless network & Wireless Logitech

I set up a wireless network in my home a while back and ended up having
to replace my cordless phones because they were on the same 2.4 ghz as
my linksys broadband router.

So then to avoid a another cable across my desk i went with a wireless
logitech keyboard and mouse. I occasionally again during bootup
get "the connection has limited or no connectivity" message in my
toolbar while the little tower in the toolbar says it's "acquiring
network address".

My question is, are the wireless logitech devices 2.4 or 5.8ghz, I
never saw anything on the box?

I'm wondering if i eliminated one problem (the phone) and introduced
the same all over again with the logitech devices? The lack of
connectivity does not seem to be as bad as it was with the phone but
yesterday I had to restart 4 times before things got back to normal.

Jill sez - I am trying to scan recipes

Jill, IF you are trying to just find a particular
receipe or perhaps a receipe that you *know* contains
the word 'mountain' or the phrase 'mountain top
frosting,' for example, easily enough you can drill
down your search via Start>Search>For Files or
Folders>All files and folders>A word or phrase in the
file: Type in what ur looking for then make sure the
correct drive is specified. Click on 'Search!" HTH

Re: [WinXPPro] Windows XP

The biggest thing to check is for drivers for your hardware. This was
discussed a couple weeks ago, and someone mentioned the video card. If XP
does not work with your video card, you would need to install XP drivers for
it otherwise your screen resolution settings & color etc. would be very
basic at best. You would need to make sure you have all the drivers you
would need to get XP to work on your computer that was built for Vista.

I have to wonder if your computer maker's website would have all the drivers
needed for XP, and maybe even directions on how the best way would be to get
XP installed, probably a long shot.

Re: [WinXPHelp] Re: Deleting Duplicate Folders... Which Ones

So Tom, sorry to butt in but you mean any target tab in properties means
it's shortcut, and no target tab means it's the actual file? Is there an easy
way of seeing the path to a file?

In a message dated 2/27/2008 8:53:46 P.M. Eastern Standard Time,
roversouth@bellsouth.net writes:

Another way to understand this is to right click on any of the My
Documents links, either the one on the desktop or the one in the Start
menu or anywhere else and then click Properties. If the first tab (or
any tab) says Target, what you've clicked on is a link, not the real
folder. If you happen to right click on the folder itself, when you
click Properties, there will be no Target tab; the first one will be
General and it will list the properties of the folder.

Re: [WinXPHelp] Re:Scanning

Sounds like you are using an OCR program. If you just want to copy the
paper, do that; just select copy and copy as a black and white photo.
If you want text that you can edit, then you'll have to keep using the
OCR program.

You might look into other OCR programs. the one that comes with
scanners is sometimes very restricted.

All OCR programs require a bit of editing and proofreading; the amount
depends on the program and on the original font and clarity.

Re: [WinXPHelp] Re: Deleting Duplicate Folders... Which Ones

Without going into a long explanation (which I'm not sure of, since it
comes from Microsoft), that's just the way they decided to do things.

It is common for Windows to give you 3 ways to get to or to do anything.
Also, for a system with multiple users, the My Documents folder that
is referenced by the icon/listing that appears on the desktop or in the
Start Menu changes as the user changes.

IOW, if there are users Sy, Debbie and Bambi on this machine, the My
Documents folder will change according to who is logged in at the
moment. If Debbie is logged in, clicking on the My Documents folder
will display Debbie's documents. Sy's documents will still be there
under C:\Documents and Settings\Sy\My Documents, as will Bambi's under
C:\Documents and Settings\Bambi\My Documents. But the icons on the
Desktop and the listing in the Start Menu will point to whomever is
logged in.

BTW, you can turn the icons/listings on/off by going to the
Taskbar>right click>Properties. Click on the Start Menu tab and
Customize. There you can decide what shows on the Desktop and in the
Start Menu.

Linux does the same thing with the /home folder. It displays the /home
folder of the user that's logged in at the time on the desktop if it's
set up that way.

This is actually behavior that goes back to Win95 on a system with
multiple users.

Try setting the Windows Explorer to display folders. Go to View>
Explorer Bar>Folders. This will give you a different view that might
releive some of the confusion.

I will check that cd out a bit more. I believe that it came up
named, ISOLINUX. There were several options to to pick from when you
boot it up. It comes up as a dos prompt. I choose option 5, from
there I could change or eliminate the windows boot passwords. I was
impressed.

[WinXPHelp] Re: Deleting Duplicate Folders... Which Ones

Tom, Thank You for a detailed reply.

Alright, I see duplicate folders or as you say it is various listings
all pointing to the "SAME" Folders. So why is it necessary to have
them showing up in three locations? I can understand if it is like a
shortcut(to a folder) and I can delete one or two of the listing
folders (two sets)… and leave just one Folder (like the ones under
Documents and Settings, which appears to be the original Folders;
Target Folders) but I can not delete them; That is it will delete the
target Folders.

Under Desktop>My Documents (and folders under) (Properties) it shows
Target Folder as going to "Sy".
Under My Computer>Documents and Settings>Sy (and folders under)
(Properties) it shows General Tab "Sy".
Under My Computer>Sy's Documents (and folders under) (Properties) it
shows in General Tab ("GRAYED OUT")
My Document and below Location:c:\Documents and Settings\Sy ? Q:Why
Grayed Out???

Further, on my old computer I believe I had changed the name of a
folder to "Sy's Documents". Then I had transferred data from old
computer to new one computer and I might have carried over this
folder (and folders under, My Downloads, My Music, etc)…. On new
computer there is already a folder named "Sy" (and folders under, My
Documents (and under My Downloads, My Music). FYI!

Sorry if I am going in circles on all this. I am just curious and if
I can remove some of the extra listings(duplicates) on my computer?

Thanks Again,

RE: [WinXPHelp] Internet connection after fresh XP install

Thanks for the reply Doug. I suspect that his situation is similar to your
driver issue. He told me tonight that Network Settings shows nothing for the
LAN section, so I assume there is no card installed. I steered him to the
device manage and told him to see if there is a NIC listed there. I'll find
out the results tomorrow. I am getting the idea that he did not have any OEM
or user created recovery disks, so there may well be no driver to install.
If that is the case, I may be able to locate the driver for him to install.

Re: [WinXPHelp] Internet connection after fresh XP install

Glenn,

I did a full reinstall of Windows XP Home on my Dell Dimension 4600 and had no internet connectivity. The reason was Windows XP did not have a driver for the Intel Pro 100 network interface so it was dead in the water. Installing the driver from the Dell Resource CD got it up and running.

Going to Device Manager and looking for network controllers and yellow question marks may tell you if this is the issue.

One of *many* possibilities...

A coworker recently did a clean sweep of his disk and re-installed WinXp
(never said if it was home or Pro). He now has no internet access with
RoadRunner. I told him that he needs to set tcp/ip to use DHCP, and possibly
provide a gateway address. I have had DSL so long that I don't remember if
there is more to setting the network up than that. What am I missing? Any
help would be appreciated.

Re: [WinXPHelp] Re: Deleting Duplicate Folders... Which Ones

They are NOT duplicate folders. The various listings all point to the
SAME folders. Anything listed under My Documents will also appear under
C:\Documents and Settings\%yourusername%\My Documents. Those 2 folders
are the same folder. If you have an icon on the desktop or in the Start
menu called My Documents, that is also the same folder. You only have
one My Documents folder for your user but you have many ways to get there.

Anything contained in the My Documents folder will appear there
regardless of which pathway you choose. It's kinda like standing in a
clothing store in front of those triple fitting mirrors. You see
yourself many times, from many angles but that doesn't mean there are
suddenly 6 of you.

RE: [WinXPPro] Windows XP Home Messed Up Situation

Hi

First a couple of questions:

Has you XPH PC ever been able to access the internet or is this a recent
occurance?

Does your XP Home machine get an address from the DHCP on the linksys
router?

Can you use Firefox to browse to the router setup page?

Have you tried switching the cables that connect the XPH PC to the router OR
if it connects wirelessly (you didn't specify) have you tried connecting
with a cable?

Have you tried running WinSockFix to rebuild you IP stack?

Have you run the Setup a home network wizard and specified the same network
name as the XPP PCs?

One other note regardless of whether use or even like IE, it controls
internet access. Internet options is an

integral component of IE and if the connection settings are messed up
Firefox won't be able to access the net.

Have you got IE7 and if so have you tried the RESET button to set the
browser back to defaults?

Let us know and maybe we can help steer your efforts to success.

Hope this helps,

Steve

[WinXPHelp] Re: Deleting Duplicate Folders... Which Ones

Hello,

First I do not have must information/files within each of the
following folders; My Pictures(1 file), My Music(1 file), My
Downloads (5 files) (I do not need any of the files)

I tried an experiment and added s new folder Test Folder #1 to My
Downloads… and it then automatically appeared in all three locations
(I have three separate My Download Folders)… so they are all
linked/are the same folder.

I decided to delete My Music and all three folders were removed. But
I went to recycle bin and restored the Folder Yaaa!

I tried to drag the My Music Folder from one location onto another My
Music Folder and it said I could not (If I recall destination folder
is the same as the folder I was trying to drag).

Under My Computer>Sy's Documents, My Downloads, My Music, My
Pictures, My Video (this does not show anywhere else)… When I right
click on Sy's Documents A popup does not show Rename or Delete?
However, for other folders (like on the Desktop, My Documents or in
Documents & settings Sy Folder or My Documents) I right click and see
Rename or Delete. Why? Interesting?

So I can just minimize all the folders and let it be… or maybe
someone has advice on what I can do to reduce the duplicate folders.

I really appreciate everyone who has taken the time to post about
this… this problem is not a big one, but it would be nice to delete
some duplicate folders.

Very interesting! To help us all, please give the name of the Linux
Boot Disk; then, as best you can, describe what it did for you. I am
confused by several things. Among them:
A. Did your Boot Disk take you directly into the Windows Operating
System (OS) thereby bypassing that password entry requirement (the
password you had forgotten).
B. How did you "default the password".
C. What is a "default password"? Previously, I have never heard that
term applied to any OS.

Hi,

When attempting to install the drivers for a USB ADSL modem I get
*error loading newdev.dll*.

Here's what I've done so far -
removed the newdev.dll from System32 and replaced it with another I
downloaded - didn't work
Downloaded the SP2 from MS - installed, rebooted - that didn't work
either.
Searched MS site for specific issue - no go.
Searched Google - lots of hits nothing viable.

As of this writing my new PC is sitting on my desk unused and
functioning mainly as a planter. A very nice and powerful planter.

Can someone :please: help me resolve this issue?

Thank you so much.

Subject: [WinXPPro] 500GB External Hard Drive Problem

I have a Seagate 500GB Hard Drive with about 100 GB of data on it. All
was working fine when all of a sudden, ,when I tried to open it I get
this message "This Hard Drive is not Formatted. Would you like to
Format it"
Is there any way of overcoming this problem and save the Data.
Don Dim
I tried it on another computer but got the same message.

Hi Jill,

Your screen resolution may have changed.

Press and hold your logo key (in lower left of keyboard; It has the Windows
flag logo on it) then tap D

This will display your desktop. Right-click on any blank area of desktop and
click Properties | Settings.

Now move the "Screen resolution" slider to the right. Click OK.

You may need to do this several times to get back to your preferred
resolution. It may be a good idea to save the horizontal and vertical pixel
values so you can go back to it without trial and error if ever needed again
in future.

[WinXPPro] taskbar changed

I think I somehow changed the taskbar , but don't know how (or how to
restore it to previous set up). Before: everything was in a single
line, left to right it was start, quick start icons, then running
programs in the middle, then other icons (printer, network, mcafee,
time, date) on the right. Now: there are 2 horizontal lines. The top
one has the start and quick starts on the left, with the running
programs below them, and the other icons on the right are doubled up
way over to the right (instead of io one horizontal line).

I don't know how I did this, but I want to get them all on to one
horizontal line like before. I tried pulling it down with the double
arrow curser, but it disappears. So I have the choice of a double
width bar or no bar. Anybody know how to get everything back onto 1
line?
Thanks.

You may have a bad/damaged partition table. There is a utility called TestDisk which may help. Here is a download link:

Re: [WinXPHelp] Re: Deleting Duplicate Folders... Which Ones

If they are merely "shortcuts," yes; if they are
representations of the folders themselves and thusly
THE folders then deleting them results in data loss.
The originator of this thread needs to open each
folder in question, examine the documents contained
therein, compare with the "real" folders then delete
the unwanted stuff/duplicate folders. A "duplicate
folder" won't necessarily contain the same data as the
one that its thought to be a duplicate of - proceed
with caution, Monsieur.

[WinXPPro] The Mystery of the newdev.dll Error - Who Can Solve This?

Desktop>My Documents(Folder)>My Download, My Music, My Pictures, etc.
and
My Computer>Sy'Sy'<WBR>s Documents>My Downloads, My Music, My Pictures
are just system made links to the original.
So deleting any one set will mean data loss.

RE: [WinXPHelp] Deleting Duplicate Folders... Which Ones

The "real" folders are under c:\documents and settings\username so that's where you should start. The folders you see on the desktop are just views of the real folders.

INSTEAD of the Run box, use Start/All
Programs/Accessories/Command Prompt to enter the Ipconfig Command; I
would further recommend that you alter that Command to read "ipconfig
/all" (less the quotation markers).

Re: [WinXPPro] admin password

I've tried. I found a work around on the net to wipe out or change the password. It worked and I simply removed the password. The same problem still exists however. Now it simply lets me click on the Administrator login and instead of asking for a password it repeats the request to Register Windows. I even tried that again but it can't since I haven't been able to get in to install the motherboard drivers to activate the Ethernet ports. It just lets me click on the Admin login, asks me to register Windows and when I say to do it later it asks for the admin login and when I click it it says to register windows. I have a feeling that the only solution is to wipe the hard drives and start all over.

Sorry. I made a mistake in my original reply by inserting an extra "s"
in the command. Correctly, it should be "control userpasswords2"

[WinXPPro] View Shared Program on a Vista machine

I have a laptop with Vista and I want to share a Program on an XP
machine. I marked the program file as "shared" successfully on the XP
machine.

I typed the IP address of XP machine into the Run command on the Vista
machine, but it won't let me access the program although it popped up.

No replies so far Patrick, still stumped. I followed a Microsoft fix
from their web page

Method 1: Call the "Setup API InstallHinfSection" function to install
Windows Firewall
To install Windows Firewall, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click
Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
2. At the command prompt, type the following command line, and then
press ENTER:
Rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection Ndi-Steelhead 132 %windir%\inf\netrass.inf
3. Restart Windows,
4. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
5. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
Netsh firewall reset
6. Click Start, click Run, type firewall.cpl, and then press ENTER. In
the Windows Firewall dialog box, click On (recommended), and then
click OK.

but that did not work. Patrick is my confirmation name , but my
family resides mostly in Cumbria....I doubt they extend down to
Caernarvon

Try this. I'm not sure if it will solve your problem, but it is easily reversible and will cause no harm. It may just change the contents of a dialog box, but it may do more.Click Start -> RunType "gpedit.msc" (no quotes) and hit Enter(this opens the "Group Policy" editor.)Under "User Configuration" double click "Administrative Templates"After a few seconds you will see a list of items on the right.Double click on "Windows Components"Double click on "Windows Update"Double click on "Do not display 'Install Updates and Shutdown' option in Shut Down Windows dialog box"Select "Enabled" and click OKThen close the Group Policy window.WilliamAvnish Kashyap <kash1000@hotmail.com> wrote:Thanks for your suggestion.I am not installing any updates. [WinXPPro] Re: Reinstall of XP - Program Files are still there

Hello, to make it easier you can download a free program to wipe your
drive completely( http://www.killdisk.com/ ) you can download this to
either a floppy disk, cdrom or a flash drive, this is a free program
that basically will fdisk your hard drives. You can wipe both your
hard drives using this free program that works pretty good (very user
friendly).

Then when you install your windows XP Professional update it will be
a completely fresh install.

Remember when you install using the windows xp pro update disk you
will need a cd containing either xp home or windows 98 during the
installation process after running this program because your hard
drive will be empty and the update disk requires seeing a previous
operating system before installing (you don't have to have the
operating system installed on the hard drive, just need the disk so
the update program can see that you do have a previous version).

Hope this helps.

Neil

[WinXPHelp] Not Win32

I still have mucho many 1.44 Mb floppies flopping around but cannot
seem to bear parting with them; wife says she's gonna do a "Disco
record burn" (Anyone remenber THAT, in Chicago?) At any rate, when I
put many of them in an external drive I get the message: A:\MICKEY.EXE
is not a valid Win32 application. (Or some such a similiar
announcement, depending on the inserted program) I understand this; is
there a workaround to get the programs to play within - or without -
Win XP, SP2? Really, I'd also like to put all of them on CDs for
archival purposes and let her HAVE her Disco burn! Ideas? Thnx!

RE: [WinXPPro] Reinstall of XP - Program Files are still there

One other bit of info which may be relevant - I used the XP Pro upgrade. It did give me the option of installing as an upgrade (and keeping files and folders) or installing as a new app. Since I wanted to wipe the drive, I chose to install as a new app.

I actually do have another copy of XP Pro here that is the full product - do you think that might do the trick?

I am going to guess you have multiply hard drive adn you didnt install it to the correct one. In which case, you may have just lost your data on that other drive. It could be an external drive, a second internal drive, or even a flash drive you ahd it that you accidently installed it on. Check those out.Chris----- Original Message ----From: Anne Goldenberger <agoldenb@hotmail.com>To: Windows_XP_Professional@yahoogroups.comSent: Saturday, February 23, 2008 2:12:07 PMSubject: [WinXPPro] Reinstall of XP - Program Files are still thereI really need to clean up my drive, so I decided to reinstall Windows XP. I can see tons of application folders in the Program Files directory, just like before I did the reinstall. The reinstall is supposed to remove all existing programs, isn't it? If I go to Change/Remove Programs, no programs are listed. Did I mess up by unplugging the system - maybe during that time it was really deleting some program files? It didn't appear that anything was happening on the disk during that time. Anne[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

RE: [WinXPPro] Reinstall of XP - Program Files are still there

Thanks for the reply Chris.

Hmm - there is a partition on the existing hard drive. During XP setup, it asked me which drive (c or d) to install it to.
I chose C. And indeed, XP Professional is now on my C drive, so it does seem to have installed there. (I had XP Home prior to this).

[WinXPPro] Repairing Windows XP Pro

I'm running an HP Pavilion d4100e with XP Pro (SP 2) with lots of
empty hard drive space and a gig of memory. It has gotten extremely slow.

Is there a way to repair Windows to speed it up without doing a reformat?

The computer has a hidden partition, and I also ordered the disks to
reinstall if I needed them.

Re: [WinXPPro] Solving the "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Either...."

That method is used when the printer has a Cat 5 cable running to it with an IP address. The computer that you complete that process on will act as the print server. To access it from the network you would add a network printer and type \\printserver\printername. That is generally how it is used. If it worked for you to add the printer that was connected via USB to another computer, then great :)

Subject: [WinXPPro] Solving the "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Either...."

Both machines have Win XP. We use wireless network. I wish I could
say I came up with this solution myself, but I didn't (another
website). But hope it helps...

To solve the error..."Windows cannot connect to the printer. Either
the printer name was typed incorrectly, or the specific printer has
left its connection to the server"

Go into My Computer - My network places - Printers and Faxes - Add a
printer - Choose "Local printer" radio button (Yes I know the printer
is attached to the other PC..but stay with me) Then choose "Create a
New Port" radio button. Under type drop down box, choose "Local" In
the "Enter Port Name" type the address of the computer with printer
attached...For example: \\132.83.120. 1\hplaserj where you type
person's IP address, and computer name. It then will ask you to
download drivers for that printer. Use any driver, it does NOT
matter. Once that is done. Try printing a document, and you will
see the remote printer as an option. Simple, fast, effective. AND
IT WORKS!!!! Good luck.

If you go run the IP config, its going to do its job, run the IPCONFIG utility, then close. So Start>run, cmd, then IPCONFIG

Hey Chris, thanks for syntax. I tried looking up the IP address on
the PC connected to printer, by entering ipconfig in the Run
command..a black screen just flickers on, without staying. It does
the same on my PC. We both have XP Home OS. Could it be because
we are on a wireless network?

RE: [WinXPPro] format a CD

Yes you can format CDR too and keep on adding files as and when needed as lonas you don't close it.
But you can only read files on the same computr.. If you close the CD, youi can use the CD on any computer but you can't add more files or data.

You can only format CD-RW, and not CDR, so you have to see what they are. [WinXPPro] Solving the "Windows cannot connect to the printer.

Under type drop down box, choose "Local" In
the "Enter Port Name" type the address of the computer with printer
attached...For example: \\132.83.120.1\hplaserj where you type
person's IP address, and computer name. It then will ask you to
download drivers for that printer. Use any driver, it does NOT
matter. Once that is done. Try printing a document, and you will
see the remote printer as an option. Simple, fast, effective. AND
IT WORKS!!!! Good luck.

RE: [WinXPPro] Installing a Program Into Just One User Account

Hi John

Installing an application to for one account is a little misleading since
the program generally goes into Program Files.

What is actually happening is that the start menu and desktop icons are
added to just one account versus the All Users account.

So, if you want a program to "appear" only in your account, just browse
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.

Look in the Desktop and Start Menu folders and move the program links to
your account. Once you do that the

other users will not "see" any references to the program.

If you want to prevent other users from accessing the program by browsing to
it via Windows Explorer, you will

need to change the security on the application folder under C:\Program Files
so that only you and the Administrator

account will have access. Browse to the program folder right-click and
select properties and then go to the security tab,

If you don't see the security tab you will need to turn OFF simple file
sharing. Double click My Computer, go to the tools menu

and select Folder options, go to the View Tab and scroll to the bottom of
the advanced settings window and then de-select simple file sharing

Hope this helps,

Steve

First run "command" to get a command window, then run your "ipconfig".

RE: [WinXPPro] corrupt or missing file

HI Charlie

I would say you have a corrupt file system. Either the drive is failing
and/or the file system is messed up

Since you cannot use the Repair console you have two options:

1) Put the drive in another XP Computer and then use the error checking
software. (Open My Computer - right click on the drive and select properties
and then select Tools and Then Error Checking).

2) Determine the drive brand name and go to the appropriate site i.e.
www.Seagate.com and then download the disk tools, Seagate's is called
SeaTools. I recommend downloading the ISO version and burning a bootable CD

If option 1 works you may be able to simply return the drive to the used PC
and boot up to the OS. If the file scan fails or reports that the drive has
hard or unrecoverable errors - try step two.

If you dislike the idea of pulling the hard drive, you can try step 2 first
and find out if it's worth the bother.

If the step 1 and 2 are successful - the drive is fine and the file system
is good BUT it still won't boot. I would save time and just reformat the
drive and reinstall XP.

Hope this helps,

Steve

Are you going to Start and then typing in Command? After the Command prompt, IPCONFIG should give you your IP address.

Hi Jill,
There is a Yahoo Group especially for Excel questions.
Check under MS Excel at Yahoo Group... or something like that. I have belonged to that group for many years. The participants are very knowledgeable and cooperative. I lurk most of the time and learn a lot. (Although I have been able to answer a <simple> question or two.... ;) )
Best of luck

Let's say you have in Sheet 1 column A

Row 1] 3
Row 2] 3
Row 3] 4

Your formula in whatever cell in say Sheet 2 would be:-

=SUM(Sheet1!A1:A3)

To save typing this, you can also place your cursor in the
cell you wish the total to be in. Now click the AutoSum
button.

Click on the worksheet where you have the column of figures
you wish to total, and highlight them in the usual way with
the mouse. Press Enter.

You should now find the formula completed for you in the
target cell.

George.

Re: [WinXPPro] problem with new installation

Thanks to everyone who offered helpful suggestions. I have finally
found the culprit of this problem. Wwhen I entered BIOS setup to change
boot sequence when I originally loaded the XP install disk, there was
an option under CPU that could be set to COMPATIBLE or NORMAL. Somehow
I changed the setting to COMPATIBLE. When I noticed this setting and
changed it back to NORMAL and rebooted, the puter is working great (and
fast).

The display properties issue arose from the fact, I think, I must have
changed a registry setting in the Unattended setup while slipstreaming
SP2 into the original install using NLite.

Anywho, everything is working correctly and as I would expect, so
again, I appreciate any help you offered.

Kevin
