Re: [WinXPHelp] Disk Defragmenter

Ricky -- here is my sequence for cleanup that I do on a weekly basis.

I will run my spyware cleaners -- update of spywareblaster and spybot (seldom run its scan but do immunize) then run Adaware 2007. Next is AVG antispyware.

Now, run CCleaner both cleanup and registry cleaner. Next is to run Regseeker.

Now I'm ready for Defrag. Ultra Defrag -- analyze and then defrag. Now run DKL V9 followed by UD -- analyze/defrag.

Good for the next week.

I have never used two defragmenting programmes in tandem. Does the above
mean that first UltraDefrag should be run and then DKL v9 run immediately
after that?

Many thanks in advance.

Warm regards,
Ricky.

Hi again Pete,
The whole saga is,
Crash after power outage, boot sequence lost from "C" drive, plug in "E"
drive [c drive clone]
Reboot with "E" in the "C" position and original C in slave. I am able to
access data on the damaged drive in slave but need to know where to access
my data from March that did not get cloned before the crash, mostly my
documents data. Although would also like to access Incredimail data files.

I have never used two defragmenting programmes in tandem. Does the above
mean that first UltraDefrag should be run and then DKL v9 run immediately
after that?

Many thanks in advance.

Warm regards,

Re: [WinXPHelp] Disk Defragmenter

for Diskeeper Lite V 9

http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/software/idu/

Diskeeper Lite 9!
To get it you need to download the full version (89MB) of Intel Desktop Utilities.

Once downloaded, run the exe to unzip its contents into a folder of your choice.

In the directory tree created you will find these folders:

.../3rdparty/Diskeeper/ -- look in here for the .exe

and .../3rdpartyDiskeeper.64/.

That should do the trick for DKL

UltraDefrager

Re: [WinXPPro] Internet speed

Hey Bob,

No need to apologize. The speedtest.net link is fabulous - I almost shared it myself. Comcast cable just doubled my speed from 8 mb/s to 16 mb/s and speedtest is the only one I know of that goes that high.

Thanks for sharing and best personal regards,

John

RE: [WinXPHelp] HDD Crash

Stan,

If you run Outlook, do this and you can retain all your emails and contact
data. Search for Outlook.Pst and note the folder it is in (I don't recall
offhand and I have mine on a separate physical drive). Copy that to your
backup as well.

Once you save all your other documents and stuff that you want from that old
drive, wipe that problem drive and reinstall XP fresh again. This will work
better than a repair install. Once you reinstall Outlook, copy that .pst
file back into the original folder. It will warn you that there is a folder
there already and ask if would you like to replace it with your copy, say
yes. This should then restore your contacts, all your emails and your
calendar.

Good Luck

Jeff

[WinXPHelp] HDD Crash

Hi everyone,
I have just suffered from a power failure and lost the boot sequence on
my HDD, I run WIN XP Pro and when I ran the disk and attempted to run
the repair system my computer told me it did not detect any HDD.
I have a backup drive and have most of my info on it and am up and
going again. I have loaded my orriginal drive in slave and can open it
ok from there. How can I find the "my documents folder in this drive as
a slave? and would anyone have an idea how to fix the drive?

Choose text plus graphics, then try on several servers, all will be

Hello,
I was about to check the link re internet speed.

I wondered how I could check what my speed is please

Also I'm getting 'kicked off' a lot. Doesn't seem to matter what I do,
it eventually sorts itself out & comes back online, strange.

[WinXPPro] USB ports

I've connected numerous equipment to my computer through the years.
every time I connect something it gets a new usb number and the
earlier ones are already "in use". So the question is can I reset all
the usb ports so I can start from the beginning on "one" again.

[WinXPHelp] Slow down Boot process to be able to read the information

Hi,
I'd like to be able to read the two or three screen's worth of
information that screems by at the very beginning of power up of my PC.
This is the information that is typically part of the BIOS related
stuff.
How can I capture (for later read) of interrupt the boot process so as
to be able to read it at a human pace? Is there a keyboard key sequence?
Thanks,
NormF

Re: [WinXPPro] cd making

explain more....if you are making a game, program it so it doesnt need to reference anything on the HD, if you are trying ot make a current game run off the CD then its not going to work. The files are compressed on the CD and get expanded and pulled out of other files and placed on the HD during the install phase.

Re: [WinXPPro] Re: Regarding the Desktop icon

Ah, no, dont do anything with the archive check box. That is for backups. When you do backups, depending on the kind you do (full, incremental, or differential) then it will clear it. If you change the file in any way, the check box will be check indicating that it is a new version from the last backup.

Re: [WinXPPro] question about locking pc's

Another idea to add to the list might be to purchase a hard drive rack. It
will give you the ability to use a key to quickly put in the hard drive you
would have windows installed on, and pull it when you leave.

or F1 or F2) and set a boot password.
5. Get a lockable PC cabinet.
6. Get a good parental control software package and password protect
it.

Some really savy kids can get around most of these but you can keep them
guessing.

[WinXPHelp] Continual Shutdown

OS: Win98 SE
Never seen this one.
At end of boot process, screen shows "It's Now Safe To Turn Off Your
Computer" - then computer shuts down. Seems as though the dratted
thing is "stuck" on shut down. Don't see anything in win.ini,
system.ini, or autoexec.bat. The BIOS/CMOS setup dosen't offer much of
a clue though there's a zillion settings - 'default setup' no help.
Any clues as to cause/what I should be looking for?

Windows Explorer is just the basic file tool for windows.
Another way to find it is: All Programs/Accessories/Windows Explorer.
To make it easy, put a Shortcut on their Desktops by following the
aforementioned path and right clicking (instead of left clicking)
the "Windows Explorer" title THEN moving your mouse pointer down
to "Send to" then left clicking "Desktop (create shortcut)".

there are malware programs out there that disable system restore...but I'd try system restore from safe mode. This method saved a buddy's computer from a re-format and total re-install.

Re: [WinXPPro] Wireless network & Wireless Logitec

I guess everybody has different experiences with wireless LANs. In my
case, I have had no problems at all, aside from reduced throughput when
I am using the machines that are out at my barn - 200' from my router.
And I know many other people using wireless LANs who have equally good
results.

My system restore cannot restore to any date I choose. I wonder if

Re: [WinXPPro] Wireless network & Wireless Logitec

Microwaves also operate at 2.4 GHz.

Personally, I would avoid wireless if you can. You will have a lot less
problems to deal with over the long haul. I have a wireless router at home,
but it is on my home network only because I have a work laptop that I come
home with from time to time. My 3 desktop computers are hard wired, and I
have not had a single connection problem with them in the last couple of
years.

Re: [WinXPPro] Wireless network & Wireless Logitech

This is new news to me, because I haven't dabbled in the wireless realm yet.
Now I'm planning on purchasing a wireless router and setting up a wireless
network at home, and I have a few cordless phones. Is there anything I
should know before purchasing a wireless router?

I did some research on wireless routers but what I read had nothing to do
with interference from other "wireless" objects. So please advise so I don't
waster my money.

Re: [WinXPPro] Windows Explorer?

Try Right clicking on the Start button and choose Explore. It will show
you your hard drive(s) in a different format than with My Computer. It
will give you a split screen whereas you can "drag and drop" files,
manage files by moving to other locations or just to copy them to a
flash drive. Send the files to a CD etc. You can move files off of an
attached digital camera. The split screen is the trick, it gives you a
to/from or a from/to for dragging files.

Re: [WinXPPro] Windows Explorer?

The best thing to do is to invest in a Windows OS book for instance Windows
XP Bible. Use that to better acquaint yourself with the product you're
helping people use. Also, if you'd like to teach, look into Microsoft's
certs. I was thinking about the certification for MS office, but my
instructor told me to aim for a Microsoft Certified Trainer Certification.
Passing that means you can teach just about any MS product.

RE: [WinXPHelp] Re: Disk Defragmenter

Please forgive my naivety but what's wrong with the defragger that comes
with XP? I use this on a regular basis and it always seems to do the job.
Possibly because I do regular defrags, it only takes around 5 minutes or so
to complete its operation (or is that a long time?).

Just as an aside, how often is it best to do a defrag - weekly? monthly?

Regards

Ed

Re: [WinXPHelp] Re: Disk Defragmenter

different stokes as they say. I have never tried a commercial defrag as most of the groups and forums and chat locations tend to like to advise people re freeware defraggers. did not care for jkdefragger at all. still sticking with ultra defrag in combo with DKL V 9.

Re: [WinXPPro] how to block keyboard and mouse in windows operating system

Of the many possible solutions of different ease, what is the end goal you are trying to accomplish? Blocking the keyboard is just a method to your goal. You can hide the keyboard and mouse, you can lock the screen, and some other posibilities.

Re: [WinXPPro] Windows Explorer?

Ok, people are nuking this windows explorer thing. Everybody knows that there is a file structure to windows. They see it all the time when the save documents and stuff. You have two main options, My computer icon on your desktop, or Windows Explorer. Both are the same thing as far novice and interemediate users are concerned. Everything that you will want to do, you can do in both, and when you have that open a file or save a file screen open, you can do. Create a folder, Rename, Delete, etc....

Hold down the windows key (usually lower left on the keyboard between the ctrl and alt keys) on your keyboard and then press the "e" key. Windows explorer should open up. This is where you need to be to copy files etc.

Everyone should be familiar with windows explorer. But it will steepen the learning curve a bit.

Or, for a better explorer, there's xplorer2_lite - free for individual
use. Try tucows or the usual sources for freeware.

RE: [WinXPPro] Icon for copying

Perhaps he must have used it but doesn't know that is Windows explorer.
Many people don't, but they use it often

Anyway to transfer a file to thumb drive, Right click on the file to be transferred
click Send to in the dialogue box and select the Thumb drive.

Good luck

Re: [WinXPHelp] Disk Defragmenter

Richard - I see that no one wants to answer your two
questions so I'll give it a go. It appears your
Diskeeper installation has become corrupted.
Redownload it and reinstall:
http://purchase.diskeeper.com/checkout/support.aspx?RId=1221&SId=1&CId=1&Aeid=0&Apid=0&pass=jglmpm55zojc2e2d5hx2vsm3
As for returning to Winsows Defrag, instead of
left-clicking "Disk Defragmenter" right-click instead,
then left-click "Properties." Make sure 'Target'
reads: %SystemRoot%\system32\dfrg.msc

Make sure 'Start in' reads: C:\WINDOWS\system32

That should fix you up.

Re: [WinXPHelp] Re: Disk Defragmenter

interesting NIck, acutally richard is not using the MS defragger but is using Diskeeper. Anyway, I tried Aulogics and found it to be totally useless. I did defrag with it and then with DKL and DKL cleaned everything when in fact Aulogics had actually done 0 defrag.

Currently the best combo I have found are UltraDefrag and DKL v 9 in tandem.

Re: [WinXPPro] Icon for copying

Karenware! I stumbled upon her stuff looking for a directory printer that would work under Vista. She seems very sharp and committed to keeping her offerings up to date. I'll take a look at what she's got.

I'd be inclined to use DKL V 9 which is freeware if you version is old and you have to pay any more $

Re: [WinXPPro] Icon for copying

I would set up a simple bat file that copies everything, including
sub-directories (x-copy?). Or you could check out a free program like
SyncBack. I've used this for a couple of years now.

[WinXPPro] Icon for copying

I have a friend who needs to backup his Documents folder to a usb thumb drive on a regular basis. When I asked him if he's familiar with Windows Explorer he said "What's that?"

So what I'd like to do is put two icons on his desktop, one representing the Documents folder and the other the USB device. I'd like for him to be able to drag the Documents icon onto the USB icon and have it copy the Documents folder to the USB.

Or am I going the long way around the block and maybe I should look at a simple batch file instead?

You are making the replacement of that battery into an major
engineering project when it is a fairly simple thing to accomplish.
Just get one of your computer literate friends to open the computer
case for you and replace the battery OR just take it to your local
computer repair shop.

Re: [WinXPPro] Wireless router

There can be many reasons for this happening. A first step is to
make sure you have the latest version of firmware in the router.
You'll find the download at the linksys website. If you have the
latest version and still have the problem you can call linksys
support and they can suggest tweaking some of the parms in the config
(assuming you dont just a defective unit).

Re: [WinXPHelp] yahoo mail

I'm not at all sure just how Yahoo! date-stamps
messages. Remember, there may be as many 8 'time
sent,' 'time-received' scenarios involved, depending
on when the originator first sent a message from what
time zone, how Yahoo! treats THAT, and on down the
line to your ISP, perhaps a relay server or 2, or 3,
on to Yahoo! itself, then a reverse process till
messages get to you - all with a 'time-in/time-out'
stamp. So, arranging them 'by the clock' may really
not be accurate, except to what you see in a numerical
sequence - Bill may have sent a message hours before
George did and George's may show up first. I have in
the past seen Yahoo! use UTC (Greenwich Mean Time) on
some but not all messages, local times on others. Is
this a stock-trading scenario that requires such
accuracy? Perhaps some of our more learned companions
on such matters will weigh in.

Re: [WinXPPro] Wireless router

Your router is probably getting over worked. You need to upgrade to a better class of wireless routers. I have had this issue with residential routers for a while. Both the wired and wireless clients werent able to connect.

[WinXPPro] Wireless router

Sometimes this happens with our small office wireless
network....Everything will be working fine, and then we cannot connect
to the Linksys router...it doesn't even show up as an available
network.

The solutions is unplugging the router and then plugging it back
in...it works fine, then?

anybody know why this happens?

[WinXPPro] Wiring, was: computer clock

A Sharpie pen works great...number all the connections on the back of the computer and put the same number on the connection on the wire as you unplug it. Have some masking tape handy for those black wire/connectors! For me the hardest one is always the speakers. Three or four identical holes side by side on the sound card...and color coding doesn't help the colorblind!

Hi Ed:
Windows XP has a program called SHUTDOWN.EXE which allows you to
easily create icons to shutdown or restart your computer.

To create a shutdown shortcut on the desktop:

1. Right click on an open area of the desktop
2. Select New / Shortcut
3. Enter in "shutdown -s -t 00" - (no quotes)
4. Press the Next button
5. For the name, enter in anything you like. I just use shutdown.
Click the Finish button.

6. For a reboot, enter "shutdown -r -t 00" (no quotes)

Re: [WinXPPro] Log in

Try booting to safe mode and logging in as administrator (and hope no
password is there also), then go to users and remove the password, then
reboot normal and log in without a password (blank).

Re: [WinXPPro] computer clock

Thanks for all the replies. The consensus is that it is the
motherboard battery.

This is bad news as I havn't a clue how to get inside the base unit
to change the battery.

Even taking the base unit to an engineer is a problem as I don't
know how to connect everything back together again.

Cheers,

Charly.

Hi:
That's a strange one! I tried it in both UPPER and lower case, on the

loads of settings in there, and I don't want to get messed up. Try clicking the

Re: [WinXPHelp] 'Turn Off Computer' shortcut

shutdown -- %windir%\system32\SHUTDOWN.exe -s-t 01

reboot -- %windir%\system32\SHUTDOWN.exe -r -t 01

create shortcut to the DT

when done, R click each and in shortcut key put S in one and R in the other so that

Alt + Ctrl + (S or R) will allow keyboard to be used to do the tasks.

Re: [WinXPHelp] 'Turn Off Computer' shortcut

Go into the power option in the Control Panel and under the Advanced
tab, set that action for the power button. Then, when you press
(briefly) the power button, the computer will start the shutdown sequence.

Personally, I have mine set to Hibernate this way.

RE: [WinXPHelp] Re: 'Turn Off Computer' shortcut

Thanks to all who replied with tips both on and off list. The following link
was recommended by one person, which I found especially useful:

http://www.liewcf.com/blog/archives/2005/06/shutdown-shortcut-one-click-turn
-off-computer/

It's simple and works a treat!

Thanks

Ed

Sure there is! Click Start/Run. Type in "CMD" Then at the command
prompt type in "shutdown/?" (all without the quotes) - figure out just
how you want to set up the shutdown and WHITE IT DOWN - lol - then go
to your desktop and make up the shortcut - HTH

Re: [WinXPHelp] yahoo mail

While at the main Outlook Express Page, look above your messages in the
"In" Folder, there should be a "From", "Subject" and "Received" column,
if you click on the "Received" Column header above the top message it
will sort from old/new to new/old each time you click on it. When
Outlook express is closed it will remember the settings and go back to
them when opened.

You can use this method to sort by each column if needed.

Most e-mail Programs have the option to click on the heading above the
date column of all messages and it will allow you to sort by old to
new
or newest to oldest. I think you can do the same when logged into
Yahoo
Mail and look above the message list for a "first"/"last" or something
to that effect.

Could someone please remind me how I go about changing my yahoo groups
mail so I don't read the newest message first.I think senility has
something to do with it.

[WinXPHelp] 'Turn Off Computer' shortcut

Is there any way I can create a shortcut for the 'Turn Off Computer' action
that I can then place on my desktop, instead of having to go into Start/Turn
Off Computer every time I want to shut down or restart?

Thanks

Ed

[WinXPPro] Re: The two IDE hard drive limit in XP?

There should be absolutely no problems in going to larger drives with XP
SP2; I don't know about SP1.
