RE: [WinXPHelp] Re: Printing DOS program data through USB connected printer

If the DOS application doesn't print directly to the printer port hardware, the routine at http://www.decompile.com/dataflex/tips/usb_printer.htm might get it working.

RE: [WinXPHelp] partition questions

You'd be better off creating or resizing a partition within Vista before installing XP. Once you have installed XP, you'll have to repair your Vista installation by, effectively, installing it again. You won't lose anything in Vista doing this.

Hi:
You can, and probably should, just remove the account. A common
occurrence. If you want to avoid the "sign in" make sure you have only one account,
and NO password. With one account, it cannot be anything other than have
administrator rights. Bye

[WinXPPro] Re:Cannot share printer

I had a problem with sharing my printers....I worked and worked..and then finally I realized that my firewalls and my anti-viruses had to be altered to allow for them. I had to go into Norton, and tell it to allow sharing...
I also had Computer Associates firewall on one of my pc's and I had to check this box in the settings to allow networking/sharing etc. ...I also had to reboot all three pc's to get the printers to share....
If you want exact details for Norton or CA firewalls allowing sharing/networking, I will be happy to list them for you.

[WinXPHelp] Problem with Win XP Pro

My Win XP seems to have Malware,Spyware, ? which prevents me from
running Norton Anti-Virus. I click on the link but cannot open NAV nor can I
open Norton Utilities.

I've tried SpyBot, Norton's online scanner, HiJack This, Ad-Aware 2007,
etc. and seem to be getting no where. I suspect spyware because when I
make a change to, for example, how I want "My Computer" to be displayed
(default view) when I re-open "My Computer" it is back to the old setting
with the "File/Folder" window on the left instead of the "System Tasks"
window.

Any help will be greatly appreciated - hopefully I do not have to do a full
reformat/installation.

Thanks.

[WinXPPro] New hard drive and user account

I got my wifes laptop back yesterday after having to put a new hard
drive in it (all data was lost) and now when she boots up she has to
click on a administrator link with a photo on a blue screen before it
fully loads and is usable. In searching around I noticed a user account
called asp.net that has password changing rights. When I called the
tech he suggested leaving the user in place. We never had to click on
administrator in the past and the tech says he'd have to change
something in registry to remove the step to click on administrator.
Does this sound correct? I was hoping just deleting the user account
would allow the pc to boot up as normal.
Any recomendations?

[WinXPHelp] Re: Fatal Error

I installed a new printer....HP Photosmart C7280.....it took three tries ....Two from the install disk and one from and H.P. download and the help of a couple of very cooperative techs at H.P. It now works fine BUT every few minutes I get a Pop up that says "FATAL ERROR DURING INSTALLATION" and shows that the download process has stopped at 96%. Very annoying. HP tech said it would stop in a couple of days. Ha!

My computer.....built August '04...AMD, XP 2500 CPU, Athlon 1.8Ghz, 512 Ram,, XP home ..version 2002. SP 1..OE 6...Firefox.... and two 60 G. hard drives (one partitioned), , single user. not networked.

Any ideas?

Re: [WinXPHelp] Printing DOS program data through USB connected printer

There is a way to load USB drivers for command line work but if you
don't specifically load them or if you are using real DOS, I think
you're out of luck. I know you can redirect output from the screen to
lpt1 but I doubt you can do it to USB.

Does the printer have a parallel port or just USB? Or get an older
laser that has a parallel connection and use it for your DOS printing.

Maybe someone else knows how.

[WinXPPro] Re: Best way to back up Outlook?

Chuck:

Copied from the Microsoft Outlook personal folders backup page:

OverviewBackingup your Microsoft Outlook information is quicker and
easier with thePersonal Folders Backup feature. Personal Folders Backup
creates backupcopies of your .PST files at regular intervals, in Outlook
2002 andlater versions, making it easy to keep all of your Outlook
folderssafely backed up.

With Personal Folders Backup, you can choose which of your .PST filesyou
wish to back up, and how often you wish to back them up.

Each .PST file contains all of your Outlook folders, includingthe Inbox,
Calendar, and Contacts. You can have a single .PST file(usually called
"Internet Folders" or "Personal Folders" in your FolderList), but you
might also have an additional .PST file that you use forarchiving
("Archiving Folders"). Personal Folders Backup lets you backup any or
all of these .PST files.

Desktop Icons in Task Bar

I've begun to encounter a weird problem on two XP
Professional systems where all the Desktop icons are
duplicated in the Task Bar.

To make matters worse, If I delete one from the Task Bar, it
also removes the Shortcut from the desktop as well.

Re-booting the system makes no difference.

Has anyone seen this before, and know of a solution?

[WinXPPro] DBX FILE RECOVERY

A few days ago, I accidently deleted on my my folders from Outlook

folder so now all my e-mails are gone. However, I believe, with the
help of a file recovery tool, I can get back by DBX file. Is it
possible some could advise me as to the best tool to use for this and
which part of the computer I need to scan.

Thank you.

Re: [WinXPHelp] Re: Reset PC

Jill -- you say he likes to download "stuff". Does this mean he is using P2P programs such as Limewire, Bearshare etc? If so the first thing is to remove any of those type programs. they are the source of lots of "naughty" little things getting onto the computer.

Now, open Task Manager. make a note of running processes, CPU usage (average) and Commit Charge. Determine also the amount of Physical RAM on the system - WinKey + Pause/Break > general tab

Once you have done that, go into msconfig (WinKey +R) > msconfig >enter and then go to Startup Tab.

use this link to check what to do with each item listed

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?

when done, Apply and ok and reboot. upon reboot, put check mark in the box at lower left and start the rest of the cleanup

Run your AV scanner and perhaps run an online scan such as Panda or Ewido in Safemode with Networking.

If a scan finds something but can't clean it, make a not of the problem and look for the path. Do a googly re the problem as maybe assistance can be found in that way. Sometimes problems get into system restore in the system 32 folder and system restore must be turned off, the scan run again in Safe Mode and then reboot, turn on system restore. System restore can be accessed from system properties >system restore tab

Reboot

If you don't already, download, install, update, run SpyBot Search & Destroy (be sure to immunize), Spywareblaster, Adaware 2007.

Reboot

Run C Cleaner including registry cleanup and Reg Seeker

Reopen msconfig and see if anything has reappeared that should not be running at startup. Reboot if you make adjustments.

Open Add/Remove programs and look to see if there are programs you don't need, want or suspect may be diliterious to your system. If not sure, use googly to determine what a program may be.

Run C Cleaner again. Run Red Seeker again.

Now run your disk defragmenter from Windows or Diskeeper Lite V 9 if you have it.

Reboot. Check Task Manager and note the figure from above. Is there an improvement? Does the system work faster?

Are you happy?

We hope so!! If not lets see what info you can now provide so someone might be able to help further.

If you're running Outlook 2002 or 2003 you can use the Personal Folder
Backup utility from Microsoft. Just download and install
pfbackup.exe. It will add a Backup option to the File menu in Outlook
and it has a few simple settings to choose from. I have used this for
years and it works well.

[WinXPHelp] XP and Autologon

With Windows XP home SP2 and
Tweak UI 2.10.0.0

With Tweak UI under:
Logon / Autologon /
Yes _ Log on automatically at system start up

Then reboot.
It works fine.

But after 3 or 4 reboots...
The switch is somehow flipped OFF:
No _ Log on automatically at system start up

What program is flipping this switch to OFF?
Any ideas?

How can the switch be left ON?
Logon / Autologon /
Yes _ Log on automatically at system start up

thus there is NO log on screen on boot
thus on boot up it goes straight to desktop

How can above setting be left permanently ON?

Regards,

David

Re: [WinXPHelp] How to remove msctrl.exe and RavMOn.exe

Third party tool? You mean other than an Anti Virus program? Most AV
programs that are worth a toot will remove any thing they detect. Or go
to the AV maker's website and look for specific removal instructions.

Hi, my computer suddenly can't connect to my wireless router. That
little yellow balloon pops up in the system tray that says "Wireless
Networks are available" but when I click on it no wireless networks
appear in the "Choose Wireless Networks" window. Before I could see my
router and about 4 neighbors too. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. It's driving me nuts. Thanks

[WinXPPro] ATI CONTROL PANEL FAILED TO INITIALIZE

I get this message when I boot, after installing a new Nvidia e-GeForce
8400 GS video card and drivers today. My pc is an HP Compaq Presario
SR1720NX running XP Home. I've upgraded [today] to 2 gb ram, and have
added a second hard drive and a cd burner with the existing dvd burner
some time back.

Here's the "cure" I found on the web. Would someone who knows more than
I [which is probably most of you and your dogs! {ggg}] look over the
quote below and advise. Are the ATI drivers the same or related to the
video card drivers; or automatically installed with them??? There are
no marks whatsoever in my device manager indicating bad drivers.

Quote:

Solution

Completely remove the *ATI* drivers, then install the latest version.

* From **Control* *Panel**, remove the *ATI* drivers.
* Use *Driver Cleaner Professional Edition
<http://www.drivercleaner.net/>* to remove files left behind by
the previous step.
* Download and install the latest drivers for your graphics card
from *ATI* Technologies <http://www.ati.com/>. It's best to
install the Catalyst *Control* Center drivers. You'll need the
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Runtime
<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyId=262D25E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3>
for this, although if your computer is quite new it probably
already has it.

End of quote.

Note: So far the pc seems to perform MOL normally, and my frame rate in
FS2004 went up from about 26 to 200.

Thanks,
James

Re: [WinXPPro] Re: Need security of Windows? We have the solution

Hi Gene,

Actually there is a good reason. There are programs out there that are excellent and free. I have promoted many myself including AudioGrabber etc and i like AudioGrabber so much that i myself may have sounded like an advertisement in the past so we moderators need to be careful and not throw the baby out with the bathwater so to speak.

But yes I agree this one does sound fishy lol. Thanks for your comments.

John, why consult anyone else? No problem is stated nor is a solution
offered to solve a problem previously discussed so it is both spam and
advertising (for a $300 program).

Re: [WinXPHelp] Re: Info

Jill -- keep in mind that removing a checked item in msconfig only stops the item from starting at bootup. it does not touch the progam itself.

anytime you want to restart something at boot, go back to msconfig and check the item again.

the icons beside the clock in the notification tray will only show up fo those programs starting at boot or some wil show up when you start them manually as some programs will minimize to the notification tray and not to the taskbar.

DO NOT turn off the AV scanner. Now AVG will still be running even if the item is unchecked but access will not be available in the notification tray. I'm not sure about other AV scanners. Frankly, I'd keep it running in any event.

Remember, any program can be started manually. I just find as does Gary, that programs I want to use all the time are just as easily started at boot as they are for me to do the job manually.

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?

use that link to check and learn about each item in the msconfig > startup list and then adjust your list based on that info and your personal preferences.

Pretty simple really. Don't start services or programs you do not NEED or use every day. I stress NEED because you need antivirus software.
I could comment about id-10-t interface errors, but that's another matter. ;o)
For example, i use windows live messenger every day, so it starts automatically, I don't use yahoo messenger every day, so I start it manually when I need it.
To improve start up time, do this. Goto start/run enter prefetch in the field on the run box. one the prefetch pane, ctrl a (select all) and delete. Windows will enter what it needs when you restart. This deletes the programs that windows looks for on start up, and rebuilds the list on next reboot / restart.
Additionally, adding more RAM to the system will improve start up speed and improve overall performance.

Think about substituting resource pigs like Adobe Acrobat with smaller, less resource intensive alternatives (ie: foxit reader ** FREE !!!!!!! **)

I would also recommend a spyware scanner / remover. Spybot search & destroy is a good one. (it is free and the author updates it regularily)

BlankCould someone explain to me in very simple terms the up and down side of having programs opening?at start-up. Someone once looked in my pc and said I had too many at start up and then FIXED it stating " your pc will start faster now" but when I went on the net I got a virus and Bammo. When the tech looked he told me my virus protection was needed to be started manually as it was not on this auto start-up thingy. I know the person took it off as all those boxes were not ticked.

If a program is not on start-up how would I activate it to it?

BlankCould someone explain to me in very simple terms the up and down side of having programs opening?at start-up. Someone once looked in my pc and said I had too many at start up and then FIXED it stating " your pc will start faster now" but when I went on the net I got a virus and Bammo. When the tech looked he told me my virus protection was needed to be started manually as it was not on this auto start-up thingy. I know the person took it off as all those boxes were not ticked.

If a program is not on start-up how would I activate it to it?

Re: [WinXPPro] USB problem

Hi Ken,

I don't believe the computer I am talking about has TweakUI installed and I'm fairly sure no one has hacked the registry. But I will install TweakUI on Monday and see if that can shed any light on the problem.

Thanks,

Yurt

Using TweakUI (or other similar programs, or by hacking the registry) it
is possible to restrict the drives that My Computer (and hence Explorer)
shows. Is it possible that this has happened? If you don't have it,
TweakUI is a free download from Microsoft, and it might fix your problem.

[WinXPHelp] High CPU demand ?

Am I correct is assuming that within XP HE's Task Manger, when it says
"CPU" under processes, that it is referring to the percentage of the
CPU's fullest capability rather than the percentage CPU for
applications currently in use ?

I have a fairly low-end PC with recently re-formatted HD to get rid
of malware junk. So, I am surprised to see that the CPU under Task
Manager is at 100% for fairy long periods. The CPU is a Celeron

OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
System Type X86-based PC
Processor x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9 GenuineIntel ~2591 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date Phoenix 6.00, 10/2/2003
SMBIOS Version 2.31
Total Physical Memory 1,024.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 454.92 MB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB
Page File Space 2.40 GB

Should I frequently see 100% with just IE7 open , casual browsing (no
video streaming, etc) and just a couple of other applications open ?
Also, should I worry if the "system idle process" is 55% CPU for brief
moments or is this normal ?

Umm, wow. That does not sound easy to do.

Is this some kind of semester-long project or homework over the weekend?

John, why consult anyone else? No problem is stated nor is a solution
offered to solve a problem previously discussed so it is both spam and
advertising (for a $300 program).

[WinXPPro] USB problem

Hi,

I have a problem with one of the computers I 'watch over' at work. It is a Dell - about 2-3 years old running XP Pro SP2 up-to-date. Also running up-to-date corporate Symantec antivirus and behind a corporate firewall.

Problem is I can't get Windows Explorer (or My Computer) to recognize that a flash drive that has been plugged into any of the USB ports. The flash drive shows in device manager. There are no problems indicated in device manager. It (device manager) shows the device working properly. I have tried several flash drives - same exact results. I removed the device in device manager and then reboot and let the system scan and it saw the 'new' device and installed it correctly and completely according to all the accompanying pop-ups.

But the results are the same. No device shown in either Windows Explorer or My computer.

As I said, this is not really a big problem as I can use other methods to transfer data on and off the computer but it bothers me that I can't figure out what is wrong.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Yurt

[WinXPPro] USB Headphones not working

Hullo. Can anyone help me with this problem or point me in the right
direction?

WinXP Prof SP2. ASUS motherboard with onboard audio.

I cannot get a set of USB headphones to work. Audio through the
traditional 3.5mm sockets works fine. Plug in the USB headset and it
is recognised correctly, and the inline volume control works. No
driver problems shown in device manager. But try to play audio and I
either get nothing or an error 0x88780032. DXDIAG says "Problem
getting extra sound info, result code 0x88780032". DirectX is v9.0c.

Thanks
Ken Scanes

Re: [WinXPHelp] Computer Magazines...

I subscribe to Smart Computing from Sandhills Publishing, and with that one
subscription I can go on-line and access all their other computer magazines for
free, Plus the online service has search support that will search all their
magazines for what you're looking for and you can read all the articles that
apply to what you searched for! And if you still have problems there a free tech
line that if you're really stumped and you can't find the answer by searching
their magazines, or asking in the forums, FAQs....etc then you can ask and one
of their techs will assist you! The magazine isn't bloated with ads (does have
a few but a lot more information that ads) and you get that delivered, but the
services you get for subscribing to the one magazine are unbelievable! I do a
three subscription at a time so I always have that online service available.
Oh, it's written in plain English also.
No I don't work for them, but I wouldn't be without them! LOL You can go to
their site and get a free trial. smartcomputing.com Our club also has a page on
our web site that tells you a lot of the details. You can click on the link to
our club home page below my e-mail in my signature and got to the top menu at
the top of the page and under benefits the first item in the drop down menu is
Smart Computing. I am the Web Master for the club's site.

Yes, all this is possible. Vista will help in partioning, and when you
install XP (dual boot, of course) it will also help in partitioning. No
problems.

You'll, of course, have to get a valid copy of XP.

I have a Vista Home Basic laptop (Everex), and have set it up for dual
booting with XP reasonably easily.

There are several sites with pretty good step-by-step instructions to do
this.

For instance,
http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_vista_and_xp_with_vista_installed_first__the_stepbystep_guide.htm

OR

http://tinyurl.com/33hnmr

You might like to take a look at other sites (from a Google search) and see
which one best suits you.

The only problem might be with hardware compatibility. Some of the hardware
might not be compatible with XP.

I had this problem, but with a Windows update on XP, Microsoft found
(surprise ! surprise !) all the drivers I needed. Which I hadn't found
independently, even from the manufacturers' sites.

All in all, it's not a problem at all.

Good luck.

related stuff. You can also read a lot of that online. I also
subscribe to Linux Format, one of the premier linux publications.

Sometimes I have to make time to read them.

RE: [WinXPHelp] Computer Magazines...

Depends on if you like to read them or not. Your question is extremely
vague. A Mac magazine would not be worth the cost for me, a PC guy. Bottom
line..look at it...if you like it..buy if. If not..drive on.

[WinXPHelp] new fact,Vista downgrade, Was this recieved?

I bought my 10 yr. old niece and Goddaughter an Acer computer with
Vista for Christmas, I failed to notice it came with Vista Home Basic,
the worst Vista out, No eye candy at all. Soon we notice that Vista
doesn't support my niece's hardware and with no eye candy, why keep
Vista? Vista home basic comes with an upgrade DVD to upgrade to
business or ultimate. To upgrade to business it costs 80.00. Acer has
downgrade CDs for business or ultimate, but not for home basic. I ask
them why, they tell me it's MSes orders. I call MS to check. They tell
me that downgrades to XP are only allowed with business or ultimate. I
tell them I have home basic. They tell me I must upgrade to business or
ultimate then downgrade to XP! So I must pay MS 80.00 to go down!
Anyway I have home basic and I want to dual boot with XP. Can I add XP
to Vista? Will XP help in partitioning? Thanks to all in advance!

Re: [WinXPHelp] Re: Info

Any program that starts when you boot your computer will consume some
of the resources (CPU cycles, space in memory, space in paging files).
Many software manufacturers add things to your startup menu so that
their programs will seem to start faster when you launch them. But all
those parts of programs running in the background slow your system down.
Install 20 programs and if they all put bits in the startup menu, the
computer begins to slow to a crawl.

Taking those things out of the startup sequence will not affect the
program's ability to run when you want it but it may take a few seconds
longer to launch the first time.

There are things that should ALWAYS be allowed to start; your AV
program, your firewall, anti spyware, that sort of thing. Kodak Easy
Share doesn't need to start up nor does MS Office startup assistant.
Those programs will run fine when you want them without having anything
in the startup sequence.

RE: [WinXPHelp] Re: Info

[WinXPHelp] Confidence

My first post here was on April 10, a week ago. I was having
adventures with my computer after upgrading to a new 80GB hard drive
and Windows XP.

I am almost back to "normal." I have managed to find all my files on
the old hard drive that a friend put into my computer as the slave
drive after putting in the new hard drive. For a while, depending on
what program I used to locate it, it was either non-existent or
existent but not accessible. Now it shows up in Windows Explorer as
the E drive.

The great thing about this group is that I have gotten some very
helpful information, and that has given me the confidence to learn
things and try things that I used to think were beyond me.

The two things that I will remember from this experience (at least
for a while) are:

a) solving a major problem with re-installing XP by installing
Xubuntu to completely wipe XP off my hard drive before reinstalling
XP. Got rid of all the stop error messages.

b) discovering machinima during a break from trying to recover
information from my old hard drive. A nice change from looking on
the Internet for a possible solution to a computer problem, trying
it, and either having nothing happen, or having something happen that
requires going back on the Internet for a solution to a new problem
(!) . . .

At any rate, as time goes on, I am getting less and less intimidated
by my computer, and this group has been a great help.

Edith

[WinXPHelp] A new fact(at least to me) about Vista downgrades!!

I bought my 10 yr. old niece and Goddaughter an Acer computer with Vista for
Christmas, I failed to notice it came with Vista Home Basic, the worst Vista
out, No eye candy at all. Soon we notice that Vista doesn't support my
niece's hardware and with no eye candy, why keep Vista? Vista home basic comes with
an upgrade DVD to upgrade to business or ultimate. To upgrade to business it
costs 80.00. Acer has downgrade CDs for business or ultimate, but not for
home basic. I ask them why, they tell me it's MSes orders. I call MS to check.
They tell me that downgrades to XP are only allowed with business or
ultimate. I tell them I have home basic. They tell me I must upgrade to business or
ultimate then downgrade to XP! So I must pay MS 80.00 to go down! Anyway I
have home basic and I want to dual boot with XP. Can I add XP to Vista? Will XP
help in partitioning? Thanks to all in advance!

In XP, right click My Computer and select Manage. On the left side of
the window that comes up, scroll down to Device Manager. Click on it and
the devices in your system will display on the right.

The only new disk I have is from the newest video card (I think) but even if I insert it, that is not what the pc is looking for. I have checked all my programs I can think of to make sure all is working and everything appears ok. How do I find out what hardware the Wizard is referring to? or how do I stop the "Wizard" screen from appearing? Tech is reluctant to come when there is no more $ involved.

Re: [WinXPHelp] Re: Hardware Wizard

Tom,
You are correct in all you say, It has cost me too many dollars relying on Techs and not knowing if what they say is correct. Sorry to be a pain but how do I find the "Device Manager" by my question you can see how reliant I am on these Techies.

Next time the new Hardware Wizard comes up, cancel it. Now go into the

Taking the same CD out to my vehicle and using its player, all

Does anyone know of a CD player program that will read this

RE: [WinXPHelp] Windows Installer

Next time you see the yellow updates shield in the notification area, click
on it. You should see that you have two options to install the updates:
Express and Custom. Select the custom option (express is the default
setting) and then select which of the updates you don't want. In future
every time Windows checks for updates, it should ignore those you've said
you don't want. You can always change this by going into Start/Control
Panel/Security Centre/Automatic Updates and then clicking on the link that
says 'Offer updates again that I've previously hidden.'

Re: [WinXPHelp] Desktop Icons in Task Bar

Personally, I prefer to use the DT as a Toolbar on the taskbar. By having it there, it eliminates having to minimize all windows in order to get to a DT shortcut and when no windows are up, I then have my wallpaper viewable and not covered by hundreds of icons. to not show the regular DT icons, R click on the DT>arrange icons>hide DT icons. Handy also to have an address toolbar and links toolbar on the Taskbar also.

Stan,

Download Gparted from:

http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php

and burn it to a CD. It will make a bootable CD and can analyze and
resize partitions.

Best of all, it is free.

I don't want to change the file's extension. I want to change the
order in which they appear in the drop-down list when I choose to
save an e-mail. Right now the order is:
Text only
Outlook template
Message format
The choice that is selected by default is 'Text'. I want it to
be 'Message format' since most of the messages I save have
attachments with them. If you don't save these in Message format the
attachment doesn't get saved with the message. I have to save tons of
these a day and rename them as I save them, so it gets to be a big
pain to have to stop a click the drop-down menu every time.

RE: [WinXPHelp] partitions

Under XP you'll need a tool like Partition Magic. If it was me though, I'd just perform the clone again.

Hi everyone, I have just installed a new 200Gb HDD and cloned my old

I used Paragon 8 to clone the drives.

RE: [WinXPHelp] Re: How do I log in as "Administrator" in Windows XP Home Edition ??

I don't actually use XP Home myself but you can start in safe mode by pressing F8 as soon as windows begins to load after power-on.
As for the second query, I seem to remember reading that you could access the conventional login screen by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL (maybe twice) at the welcome screen.

Thank you for your reply Angus.

I think you're right, indeed the "HP-Proprietario" account is of type
"Administrator", so it should have the same privileges of the
"Administrator" account.

A couple of questions:

1- How do I start XP Home in safe mode ?

2- How do I log-in the classical way, i.e. explicitly typing user-
name and password in the old style dialogue box ?

Thank you very much in advance.

RE: [WinXPHelp] WinXP Updates

I wouldn't worry. Updates don't add themselves to windows but normally replace components with newer components that have had the bugs ironed out. The replacements don't generally use significantly more system resources and can often use less. Uninstall files for the updates will be stored on your hard disk drive and they can gradually build up but can be easily deleted if you run short of disk space.

The administrator account is shown if you start XP Home in safe mode. I'm fairly sure that all XP accounts are, by default, administrators though so you shouldn't normally need to log in as the "administrator" account.

Hi, I have Win XP Home Edition, Microsoft BSA (Baseline Security
Analyzer) tells me that I have 2 administrator-level accounts:

- Administrator, and

- HP-Proprietario.

When I turn on the PC, it prompts me several icons, corresponding to
several users, among which there is "HP-Proprietario", but there's
not "Administrator". So my question is: How do I log-in as
"Administrator" ??

More generally, how do I log in the classic way, typing username and
password in the "old" dialog box ?

Re: [WinXPHelp] Re: Backup Software

Last night I made a batch of Windows XP SP2 setup hoot disks 6 of them altogether. The troubles I was having was that after I downloaded and installed a few things, I would have to do a retart and then the Windows XP screen would come up but with the green sliding bar but then the screen would go black. It happned to me three times. They have been able to save my data files but not the program and then would reinstall the Windows XP SP2 on my hard drive. Yeah I most likely would like to get a program that I can copy with onto another disk or whatever. I wish I had my Nero Ultra 8 program. I was able to get that free from my daughter's boyfriend. He got it off the internet but now I can't seem to find it for free.

Re: [WinXPHelp] Re: Backup Software

Cindy,

I wasn't able to locate "ntbackup.exe" any where in my Windows folder/sub folders either so you're not alone.

I use Karen's Replicator to back up a small number critical folders automatically every ten minutes on my PC. For me it was a bit confusing to configure at first but works well now that I'm familiar with it.

Looking more closely at your post, I suspect your intent may be to back up your entire system so if it crashes you do not have to install Windows and all of your programs over again. If that's the case, then backup software that can create an "image" of your working drive would be the choice. I personally use an older version of Norton Ghost to do that exact chore for me.

Let us know if that is your goal and I'm sure you'll get some good imaging software recommendations from the group.

You might also tell us if you're looking to back up to DVD or external USB/Firewire/E-Sata drive.

Doug

Strange. Well, Tom Demmas's suggestion is right on target anyway.
