If the DOS application doesn't print directly to the printer port hardware, the routine at http://www.decompile.com/dataflex/tips/usb_printer.htm might get it working.

You'd be better off creating or resizing a partition within Vista before installing XP. Once you have installed XP, you'll have to repair your Vista installation by, effectively, installing it again. You won't lose anything in Vista doing this.

Hi:
You can, and probably should, just remove the account. A common
occurrence. If you want to avoid the "sign in" make sure you have only one account,
and NO password. With one account, it cannot be anything other than have

I had a problem with sharing my printers....I worked and worked..and then finally I realized that my firewalls and my anti-viruses had to be altered to allow for them. I had to go into Norton, and tell it to allow sharing...
I also had Computer Associates firewall on one of my pc's and I had to check this box in the settings to allow networking/sharing etc. ...I also had to reboot all three pc's to get the printers to share....
If you want exact details for Norton or CA firewalls allowing sharing/networking, I will be happy to list them for you.

[WinXPHelp] Problem with Win XP Pro

My Win XP seems to have Malware,Spyware, ? which prevents me from
running Norton Anti-Virus. I click on the link but cannot open NAV nor can I
open Norton Utilities.

I've tried SpyBot, Norton's online scanner, HiJack This, Ad-Aware 2007,
etc. and seem to be getting no where. I suspect spyware because when I
make a change to, for example, how I want "My Computer" to be displayed
(default view) when I re-open "My Computer" it is back to the old setting
with the "File/Folder" window on the left instead of the "System Tasks"
window.

Any help will be greatly appreciated - hopefully I do not have to do a full
reformat/installation.

[WinXPPro] New hard drive and user account

I got my wifes laptop back yesterday after having to put a new hard
drive in it (all data was lost) and now when she boots up she has to
click on a administrator link with a photo on a blue screen before it
fully loads and is usable. In searching around I noticed a user account
called asp.net that has password changing rights. When I called the
tech he suggested leaving the user in place. We never had to click on
administrator in the past and the tech says he'd have to change
something in registry to remove the step to click on administrator.
Does this sound correct? I was hoping just deleting the user account
would allow the pc to boot up as normal.
Any recomendations?

I installed a new printer....HP Photosmart C7280.....it took three tries ....Two from the install disk and one from and H.P. download and the help of a couple of very cooperative techs at H.P. It now works fine BUT every few minutes I get a Pop up that says "FATAL ERROR DURING INSTALLATION" and shows that the download process has stopped at 96%. Very annoying. HP tech said it would stop in a couple of days. Ha!

My computer.....built August '04...AMD, XP 2500 CPU, Athlon 1.8Ghz, 512 Ram,, XP home ..version 2002. SP 1..OE 6...Firefox.... and two 60 G. hard drives (one partitioned), , single user. not networked.

Any ideas?

There is a way to load USB drivers for command line work but if you
don't specifically load them or if you are using real DOS, I think
you're out of luck. I know you can redirect output from the screen to
lpt1 but I doubt you can do it to USB.

Does the printer have a parallel port or just USB? Or get an older
laser that has a parallel connection and use it for your DOS printing.

Maybe someone else knows how.

I put CD-R in disk drive, then right click mouse and seelect "Sendto", in my case it's

I've begun to encounter a weird problem on two XP
Professional systems where all the Desktop icons are
duplicated in the Task Bar.

To make matters worse, If I delete one from the Task Bar, it
also removes the Shortcut from the desktop as well.

Re-booting the system makes no difference.

Has anyone seen this before, and know of a solution?

[WinXPPro] DBX FILE RECOVERY

A few days ago, I accidently deleted on my my folders from Outlook
Express. Unfortunately, the DBX file has diappeared from the store
folder so now all my e-mails are gone. However, I believe, with the
help of a file recovery tool, I can get back by DBX file. Is it
possible some could advise me as to the best tool to use for this and
which part of the computer I need to scan.

Jill -- you say he likes to download "stuff". Does this mean he is using P2P programs such as Limewire, Bearshare etc? If so the first thing is to remove any of those type programs. they are the source of lots of "naughty" little things getting onto the computer.

Now, open Task Manager. make a note of running processes, CPU usage (average) and Commit Charge. Determine also the amount of Physical RAM on the system - WinKey + Pause/Break > general tab

Once you have done that, go into msconfig (WinKey +R) > msconfig >enter and then go to Startup Tab.

when done, Apply and ok and reboot. upon reboot, put check mark in the box at lower left and start the rest of the cleanup

Run your AV scanner and perhaps run an online scan such as Panda or Ewido in Safemode with Networking.

If a scan finds something but can't clean it, make a not of the problem and look for the path. Do a googly re the problem as maybe assistance can be found in that way. Sometimes problems get into system restore in the system 32 folder and system restore must be turned off, the scan run again in Safe Mode and then reboot, turn on system restore. System restore can be accessed from system properties >system restore tab

Reboot

If you don't already, download, install, update, run SpyBot Search & Destroy (be sure to immunize), Spywareblaster, Adaware 2007.

Reboot

Run C Cleaner including registry cleanup and Reg Seeker

Reopen msconfig and see if anything has reappeared that should not be running at startup. Reboot if you make adjustments.

Open Add/Remove programs and look to see if there are programs you don't need, want or suspect may be diliterious to your system. If not sure, use googly to determine what a program may be.

Run C Cleaner again. Run Red Seeker again.

Now run your disk defragmenter from Windows or Diskeeper Lite V 9 if you have it.

Reboot. Check Task Manager and note the figure from above. Is there an improvement? Does the system work faster?

Are you happy?

I have a laptop hubbie plays with and it is so slow because he likes to dl stuff etc. I want to clean out the thing back to how it was when we purchased it. I have tried deleting all the programs I can tell are not Ms or Windows but some I am not sure of. Is there a way to make it delete all bar what it needs without deleting the good stuff? I forgot to mention it would need to know the good from the bad.

If you're running Outlook 2002 or 2003 you can use the Personal Folder
Backup utility from Microsoft. Just download and install
pfbackup.exe. It will add a Backup option to the File menu in Outlook
and it has a few simple settings to choose from. I have used this for
years and it works well.
